Shadows, Scars, and Stories

A note from The Phase Journal – Barrie, Ontario

Every tattoo feeds a story. Every dark booth holds a confession. Every glass of scotch is a slow, liquid confession of who we really are.

Welcome to The Phase Journal—where the shadows talk, the scars speak, and the misfits finally get to write their own endings.

Why This Journal Exists

We built The Phase Inc to be more than a venue. It’s a space where people can be too much, too loud, too weird, and still feel seen.

The Phase Journal is the paper heartbeat of that idea. It’s where we share stories from Barrie’s underworld: the bartenders who listen through the chaos, the tattoo artists who translate pain into art, the sound engineers who make bass feel like a heartbeat, and the misfits who finally stop apologizing for taking up space.

Think of it as a grunge‑steampunk diary of a city that’s been polished too long. Here, the gears are rusty, the ink is messy, and the stories are real.

What You’ll Find Here

This isn’t lifestyle fluff. It’s a raw, honest look at the subculture growing around The Phase Inc—person by person, drink by drink, show by show.

You’ll find:

  • Artist spotlights – Tattoo artists, musicians, painters, and makers who don’t fit the “normal” mold.
  • Behind‑the‑bar stories – Late‑night, late‑night conversations that reveal more than any job ever could.
  • Event reports – What really goes down when the lights go low and the bass gets too loud for the polite world.
  • Listener’s corner – Short essays, thoughts, and confessions from guests who feel they don’t “belong” anywhere else.

Some of these pieces will be polished. Some will be scribbled. All of them will be honest.

Writing for The Phase Journal

If you’re someone who writes, sketches, photographs, or simply tells stories too vivid to hold inside—you’re the kind of voice this journal wants.

We’re looking for contributions that:

  • Feel real, not rehearsed.
  • Celebrate darkness, difference, and imperfection.
  • Connect Barrie’s misfits, artists, and night‑owl spirit.

If you’d like to write, draw, or otherwise share your voice with The Phase Journal, reach out with a short note and a sample of your work to:

info.thephase@gmail.com

We’ll collab with you on tone, length, and what best fits the dark‑industrial mood of The Phase.

A Note on This Journal’s Vibe

The Phase Journal is meant to feel like a leather‑bound notebook someone left behind on a dark barstool—pages a little warped, ink a little smudged, but the words intact.

In terms of mood:

  • Grunge – imperfect, raw, unfiltered.
  • Steampunk‑adjacent – like a Victorian diary whose owner spends their nights in a tattoo bar instead of tea parlors.
  • Barrie‑centric – this is for the people who live, work, and bleed in this city.

Every entry is a small monument to the side of Barrie that doesn’t show up in the brochures.

Next Issue: The Misfit Manifesto

In the next installment of The Phase Journal, we’ll be running a series titled “The Misfit Manifesto”—a collection of short essays, drawings, and confessions from people who never quite fit the city’s “polished” image.

If you’ve ever written something you were too scared to share because it felt “too much,” that’s exactly what we want.

Send your piece (1–3 pages max) as a PDF or Clear Google Doc link to:
